HISTORY
In September, 1976, Christo and Jeanne-Claude installed their historic environmental artwork, “Running Fence,” across 24 miles of ranchland in Sonoma and Marin Counties. Afterwards, they gave all the materials from the project to the ranchers who had so graciously loaned them their land. The ranchers were able to use the materials for any use they wished, but most did not preserve the historic material and it has become lost through the years. A few of the original 2,050 textile panels belong to museums or heirs who will never part with them.
In 2001 Dianne Smith acquired eleven panels from Paul DeBernardis, an art collector, and eventually contracted with fine artists to create fine artworks out of the material.
